The “Pirate Chest” Project: Bespoke Woodwork that Transformed a Home

CABINETWORK’s collaboration with a creative newlywed couple resulted in a series of show-stopping, custom-made furnishings—starting with a bold “Pirate Chest” bathroom vanity and culminating in a striking oak kitchen and dining table that celebrate the natural beauty of wood. By artfully highlighting knots and cracks with black epoxy and crafting an adjustable shelving system for a walk-in closet, CABINETWORK demonstrated its commitment to merging design innovation, meticulous craftsmanship, and personal style in every project.

The “Pirate Chest” for the Master Bathroom

The first task was to create a set of bathroom cabinets made from solid ash. Despite its seemingly simple look, this design featured several challenging details, including angled door slats set precisely at 35 degrees. Achieving the unconventional color requested by the client required a meticulous process of wood preparation and special staining techniques. Our production team affectionately nicknamed this project the “Pirate Chest,” due to its bold style and rugged, treasure-chest vibe. Delighted with the final result, the clients entrusted us with the rest of the home’s furnishings.

A Kitchen That Embraces Natural Beauty

Next on the list was the kitchen, an artful blend of multiple design styles. We used natural oak for the cabinet doors, carefully cutting long slabs to preserve each board’s inherent character. Rather than hiding knots, cracks, and other imperfections, we highlighted them with black epoxy resin, creating a striking visual contrast that underscored the wood’s raw beauty. The outcome was as distinctive as it was functional, earning high praise from everyone involved.

A Family Dining Table with Character

Since the couple desired a dining table that complemented the kitchen, we scoured our suppliers for a suitable oak slab of the right size and thickness. Although the slab showed signs of termite damage, we embraced these irregularities—once again filling them with black epoxy to celebrate the wood’s natural story. The result was a centerpiece that harmonized perfectly with the kitchen while making a statement of its own.

Additional Custom Woodwork

Impressed by our attention to detail, the clients asked us to craft even more wooden elements for their home. This included cladding the walls around the fireplace, installing wooden beams, and adding unique features in the utility rooms. One of the most fascinating pieces was the walk-in closet, where we engineered a special shelving system that allows the owners to adjust shelf heights at any time. These hefty wooden shelves offer both practicality and visual impact.

The Grand Finale: A Large Closet

The final piece in the same area as the “Pirate Chest” was a spacious closet, rounding out the project with a consistent design language and craftsmanship. By closely collaborating with the clients and designer, CABINETWORK successfully delivered a one-of-a-kind interior that merges creativity with functionality.

Through every challenge—whether it was perfecting a tricky angle, mastering an uncommon color technique, or highlighting natural flaws in the wood—the CABINETWORK team remained committed to bringing this imaginative vision to life. The result is a home filled with bespoke furniture that captures the clients’ personalities and respects the natural beauty of the materials. Once again, we’re proud to have proven that when it comes to custom furniture, there truly are no limits to what we can achieve together.

“We absolutely love how everything turned out. The team at CABINETWORK was super patient with all our random requests, and they actually made the ‘pirate chest’ vanity cooler than we even imagined! The black epoxy detail is insane—we literally never seen anything like that before. It’s like our whole home now feels like a unique oasis. If you want something truly custom, these are the folks you wanna call. Can’t wait to have them back for our next project!”
